Momiji Japanese Restaurant (9) Belmont       SQUiD 01-12-2008

Food:

Took the two kids here for a quick dinner. We shared the fresh tuna, prawn & chicken teriyaki sushi rolls (5 pieces of each) and the small vegetable tempura (which came out with a small bowl of rice & dipping sauce). The sushi rolls were all freshly made and were very tasty. The tempura was deep fried in a nice light batter - very nice!!

Service:

Service is really genuine and friendly. Food served with a smile by nice Japanese folk :)

Ambience:

Simple wooden tables and chairs in a clean cute little place. Awesome place for being able to chuck on a pair of trackies and head down to the local Japanese restaurant for a great feed and they have takeaway if that's not your thing.

Overall:
Excellent value for money. Great friendly staff and fresh delicious food. Add this to your list of cheap (decent) eats!

Bensons (9) Perth       SQUiD 30-11-2008

Food:

For entree,we ordered the Sumac Prawn Cocktail, which came out on a bed of lettuce and cherry tomatoes with thousand island dressing. While nothing special, the prawns were fresh and the dish was tasty.

For mains, my friend ordered the Braised Peking Duck with Porcini Mushrooms. It came out on a rather small bed of mash, the duck was nice and moist and came away from the bone very easily and had a very good flavour. I had the Soft Shell Crab and Scallop Risotto. The soft shell crab was deep fried to crispy perfection and the rice was neither too dry nor too gluggy. Overall one of the best risottos I have ever eaten.

Dessert was Sticky Date & Ginger pudding - not the best pudding ive had but was indeed tasty and well received.

Service:

Service was really good. Our waiter was very professional and helpful with giving advice on which dishes to order. Menus, water & drinks all arrived very quickly.

Ambience:

Casual, comfortable and clean.

Overall:
A nice casual restaurant, with reasonably good food and good service. Drop by if you are in the east end of Perth.

Terrazza Cafe Applecross (4) Applecross       johninperth 29-11-2008

Food:

We had a table of 15 or so, so ill just talk about mine and my partners meals.
First off we had the GARLIC BREAD and the SALSICCIA ITALIANA. The bread was nice, could have done with a little more garlic though, the Sausage was quite a nice little starter with some really punchy fetta.
I had the GRILLED SPANISH CHICKEN which was fantastic, cooked well and presented on a bed of beer battered fries. The chicken had there own Spanish glaze, which was great but a little overpowering. Topped with some Garden salad.
My wife had the LAMB SHANK which I have to say was fantastic. Nice and tender presented well, sitting on a bed of mash with red wine drizzled from the cooking of the lamb. The flavours were just right with this dish.

Service:

This was definitely the highlight, quick and thoughtful service here. As soon as we walked in our bottle of red was being opened and poored. Bottled water was kept fresh at all times and there timing with taking away plates etc was sharp. All the mains came out on time.

Ambience:

I really liked the more open feel here compared to many Italian flavoured restaurants, nice lighting and decor combined with a smallish crowd really made it a place to re-visit

Overall:
Some pretty decent food for the money, not the best value I've had. Service was great and the willingness for the wait staff to chat was fantastic. Ill definitely come back with some friends!!

Cafe Bella Rosa (18) East Victoria Park       Peta23 27-11-2008

Food:

We ordered Spag Bol, and it was sensational! The only thing I would have added would have been fresh Parmesan! But otherwise, delicious. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the sauce was robust and hearty. Fantastic!

Service:

Amazing service! We ordered a beer, but they had none, so the waitress went to the bottle shop for us! Now you can't fault that!!!

Ambience:

We sat outside and watched the busy people go along their merry duties. Busy and a good atmosphere!

Overall:
Loved it. Will be going back to try other dishes.

Coco's Riverside Bar & Restaurant (13) South Perth       fred 27-11-2008

Food:

Went to Coco's for Dad's 60th, all the seafood dished were fabulous, but the steak and lab cutlets, were tough and very over cooked. The best dishes on the table were the seared scallops, and the duck. Although the steak eaters were disappointed the rest of us were almost licking the plates.

Service:

Service was excellent, have been recently, and it wasn't so good so warned the family not to expect too much, but everyone was very pleasantly surprised.

Ambience:

Can't beat the views, we were sitting on the balcony on a beautiful 23 degree day. Unbeatable!

Overall:
A great place that is consistently more good than bad. Much more than most places in Perth. Will definitely be back, and being a wine club member makes it that little bit more affordable.

Hanami Japanese Restaurant (22) Mt Lawley       ayumirain 27-11-2008

Food:

Beef tataki - really delicious! I couldn't taste an ounce of rawness, the meat was so tender and the sauce was really great!
Rapture roll (think that's the name) - tempura prawn in the middle, rice, nori, and a fresh slice of salmon on top, very creative and tasted great with soy sauce and wasabi :) Very fresh!
Chicken udon - I loved the soup, it was very tasty and the udon was springy too.
Green salad: nothing spectacular but tasted good!

Service:

It's not really 5 star service that you would get in a fine dining restaurant. Just some minor details..e.g. not getting plates (when it was quite obvious my friend and I were sharing), and not getting soy sauce for the sushi, and no water refilling. But maybe coz' they were extremely busy!

Ambience:

Small but clean and modern with a light Japanese style to it. Nothing spectacular but it's definitely not shabby on the inside and I was very comfortable.

Overall:
I don't often go out to eat Japanese food anymore, just because I've been to many places that all have the same varieties and it just gets boring! That and also the fact that nothing tastes authentic around here. BUT - I heard good things about Hanami from a friend and when I tried it I was pleasantly surprised! I have to say I am looking forward to going back and have already made another reservation! You can judge by the good business on weekdays that the food is definitely good.
